Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Castine (UUCC). We wish you a warm welcome, and are glad that you found us.
Our Sunday Service begins at 10:30 am and we encourage our first time guests to feel free to ask any questions you might have about the UUCC or Unitarian Universalism. There will be members of the congregation, our minister and others available to welcome you and help you feel at ease.
Children normally attend the first part of the service and then leave to attend class after a “Story for All Ages.” Children who prefer to stay with their parents are of course welcome to do so. You may speak to an usher about our religious education program and they can introduce you to our Director of Religious Education who can better describe our religious education program for children and the activities planned for that particular day.
We are pleased that our historic building offers great acoustics that are able to amplify the quality of our Moller pipe organ, Steinway grand piano and harpsichord during our Sunday Services. We enjoy having a choir which sings at some of our services and always welcomes new participants.
Please note that ours is a congregation that does not profess a doctrine or creed. During the early 1800’s American Unitarians originated from some of the earliest colonial Christian congregations. These early Unitarians championed the progressive religious idea that it is the individual who believes not the church therefore members should not be expected to profess a creed. The Universalist Church of America was formally established in 1866 as the Universalist General Convention. In 1942 the name was changed to the Universalist Church of America and in 1961, it consolidated with the American Unitarian Association to form the Unitarian Universalist Association. Historically, the defining theology of Universalists is belief in universal salvation. Individual Unitarian Universalists are encouraged to develop their beliefs using reason, openness to the inspiration of all wisdom literature, one’s own experience and the benefit of being part of an active and open congregation in which to develop ones beliefs.
Here at the UUCC, you can expect Sunday Services and sermons that will explore a variety of religious perspectives on the many emotional, spiritual and ethical issues that we face in our changing world.
After the service please join us for coffee hour where we meet to talk and socialize.
